#PeppaPigGate- a blithering idiot, or a political genius?

After yesterdays CBI Conference, the nation has not stopped talking about the bizarre behaviours of our Prime Minister, with it even being the foundation of jokes on I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here and Lorraine.

Boris Johnson, a man known for his unbrushed hair, Boris Bikes and for hiding in a fridge. Boris has caused many a stir over his years as Mayor of London, and his more recent Prime Ministership, but yesterdays performance at the CBI Conference was truly something else, from a glowing review of Peppa Pig World to making engine sounds, to awkward shuffling of his speech, it was nothing short of a car crash, but was this all intentional?

Yesterday, a bill was voted on in the House of Commons which has been donned the "NHS Privatisation Bill", which resulted in 272 votes for, and 246 votes against it. It will abolish approximately 100 Clinical Commissioning Groups, which decide how local NHS services are provided in England. Instead, there will be ICSs, or Integrated Care Systems, which are made up of Integrated Care Partnerships and Integrated Care Boards (ICPs and ICBs), as well as councils and charities. ICSs will then be able to control spending and set five-year plans. The issue with this is that ICBs can include people who represent private health firms, and these will be some of the individuals who influence the healthcare services which will be kept, shut or digitalized, meaning the people running private healthcare will directly influence the healthcare you can receive on the NHS.

Naturally, this has been met with fierce backlash from anti-NHS Privatisation groups, to which Health Secretary Sajid Javid responded that he will stop representatives from the private sector from being a part of this system if they "Could reasonably be regarded as undermining the independence of the health service”. Personally, in the midst of a Tory sleaze scandal, and merely months after it came out that £1 billion of government contracts given to the friends of members of the Conservatives, I am not sure how inclined to believe him.

However, back to Peppa Pig Gate. Once his little show was over, Johnson was asked by a reporter "In your speech to the CBI, you lost your notes, you lost your place, you went off on a tangent about Peppa Pig. Frankly, is everything OK?”, to which he responded with complete composure, “I think that people got the vast majority of the points I wanted to make and I thought it went over well". So, either this man is entirely delusional, suffering from amnesia, or this was planned as a distraction so the Tories could quietly give the go-ahead on the privatisation of the NHS, while the country can't stop talking about their leader's incompetence.
